Ever since the creation of the world God’s eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been seen and understood through the things God has made. (Romans 1:20)
When I was a kid, I loved playing with Legos. Not these predetermined sets where you have follow these incredibly complicated step-by-step directions to build a Cherry Blossom Tree House or the Star Wars Death Star. No, my Legos were just square and rectangle blocks, and I had to use my imagination to create a tree house or a Death Star.
And use my imagination I did. I would build houses complete with kitchen, bath, living room and a nice deck overlooking a lake. Or I would build a whole squadron of fighter jets heading out to do battle in the skies. Starting with a pile of blocks I would have a picture in my mind and then go about creating a world one Lego block at a time.
Imagine that we are God’s Legos, as is all of creation. At the dawn of creation God had a picture of what could be, and through God’s “eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are,” God has been trying to get us to snap ourselves together into something that resembles the wonder of what God has in mind.
I believe God has an ultimate purpose for creation, something I often refer to as the kingdom of God. But rather than just snapping that world into being like a little kid playing with Legos, God has included all of creation in the process of that building. And through God’s invisible power and divine nature, God is luring us toward the best world that can be.
I also believe that as we work together in building God’s kingdom, we can find the same joy as a child sitting on the floor with big pile of Legos in front of them. Listen for God’s guiding. Much can be understood through the creation God has already made. And try to imagine the world God has in mind as the ultimate aim of creation. Through the little choices we make every day, we work together with God to bring that better world into being.
I still like playing with Legos. That’s because there is a little creator in all of us.
