Be Like Play-Doh

Be Like Play-Doh

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

When I was young, I enjoyed playing with Play-doh. I liked the smell. I liked the feel of it squishing through my fingers. And I liked being able to make different creations as I shaped and molded it into funny colored animals or strange looking cars. When I was done, I would separate out the different colors as best I could and put them back into their containers and put them away until next time.

Except, when I was young I wasn’t very good at putting things away when I was done with them.

In reality, I would leave the Play-doh out somewhere in my bedroom in whatever shape or form I had made and it would dry out and harden and then need to get thrown away. It could no longer “be transformed” into whatever my imagination came up with. And as my parents weren’t ones to just keep buying more, that meant no more Play-doh, at least for awhile.

The apostle Paul wants us to “be transformed” by the will of God. He wants us to mold and shape ourselves into God’s image for who we can be in God’s kingdom. However, if we don’t tend to spiritual care, we become dried out and “conformed” to whatever the world of this age has shaped us to be.

Do not be conformed to the world as it is. Do not let yourself get dried out and hardened by the world. Tend to your spirit. Reach out to God. Care about others. Seek the will of God and see yourself being transformed into something “good, acceptable, and complete.”
