Shelter From the Storm

Shelter From the Storm

How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. (Psalm 36:7)

Have you ever been caught in a sudden downpour and gone running for shelter? Many years ago, I was out on a long run (marathon training) when a sudden downpour turned into thunder and lightning. Now I don’t mind running in the rain. In fact, on a warm day I actually enjoy it. But I don’t mess around with lightning.

Still several miles from home, with thunder and lightning all around me, I was looking for a barn or a porch to take refuge under. As I came to the closest house and made my way to their spacious front porch, I sincerely hoped the homeowner wouldn’t mind my trespassing. No sooner had I gotten to the top step when a woman came out with a towel in hand which she offered to me saying, “I saw you on the road and I was going to wave you up to the porch.” I graciously accepted the towel as we chatted for ten minutes or so while the storm blew over. Once the coast was clear, I thanked her and was back on my way.

I don’t know what storm you may be facing at the moment, but there are communities of support and care available to help. Support groups, counseling services, churches, we all stand at the ready to offer shelter from the storm.

And always, there is the steadfast love of God and the shelter of God’s wings. With God’s help, we can weather life’s storms.
