O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. (Psalm 34:8)
Sometimes I think of the 1970 song, “Signs,” by the Five Man Electrical Band, only I substitute “words” for “sign.”
Words, words, everywhere a word,
Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind.
Do this, don’t do that, can’t you see and hear the words.
We are constantly inundated with words. Words come at us through the TV, the radio, newspapers, books, social media, the internet, Google, Alexa, Siri, family, neighbors, friends, strangers. Words, words, everywhere a word.
Especially from preachers.
I admit, I love words. I read A LOT. And my favorite task is writing sermons. But even I sometimes need to just find quiet. No words in front of my eyes. No voices drumming words into my ears. Just a time to engage the other senses.
The taste of an apple.
The smell of spring.
The beauty of a snowfall.
The joy of birdsong.
O taste and see that God is good, no words required.
