I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart. (Psalm 40:8)
What brings you delight?
Seeing wonder and joy in the face of a child.
The first crack of sunrise peeking above the horizon.
A task done and done well.
How about doing God’s will.
Delight is a feeling of great pleasure, joy, or satisfaction. To find delight in something brings happiness and a sense of deep contentment, whether through what we do or simply witnessing something beautiful.
However, before we can find delight in doing God’s will we first have to know what God’s will is. That’s where the second half of our verse for today comes in: “Your law is within my heart.”
When we think of law, we might think of traffic laws or tax law, but in scripture law means God’s Word (as in scripture itself), God’s commandments, and even God’s will. To have God’s will in our heart then can mean to live in full harmony with what God wants for us, for each other, and for the world around us. The more we seek to live in a deep, abiding relationship with God, the more God’s will is within us, and the more delight we find in life.
May our relationship with God bring us great delight as we strive each day to do God’s will.
